Over-The-Counter Sales of Paper Savings Bonds Ending in 2011 |
| | |
|
|

|
| |
|
The U.S. Department of the Treasury will end over-the-counter sales of paper savings bonds on December 31, 2011, including sales through financial institutions and applications mailed directly to the Federal Reserve Bank by customers. This move is expected to save taxpayers an estimated $70 million over the next five years.
Although paper bonds are being discontinued, electronic Series EE and Series I Savings Bonds will remain available for purchase via TreasuryDirect. This secure, web-based system, operated by the Bureau of the Public Debt, has been used by investors since 2002 to purchase savings bonds online.
You can purchase, manage and redeem electronic savings bonds online through www.treasurydirect.gov. Electronic savings bonds are secure and convenient to manage through TreasuryDirect, and investors no longer have to worry about misplacing, losing or storing savings bonds. In addition, with a TreasuryDirect account, you can purchase electronic savings bonds as gifts and also convert paper savings bonds to electronic.

Temporary FDIC Insurance Coverage |

|
|
NOTICE OF CHANGES IN TEMPORARY FDIC INSURANCE
COVERAGE FOR TRANSACTION ACCOUNTS
|
| All funds in a "noninterest-bearing transaction account" are insured in full by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation from December 31, 2010, through December 31, 2012. This temporary unlimited coverage is in addition to, and separate from, the coverage of at least $250,000 available to depositors under the FDIC's general deposit insurance rules. |
| The term "noninterest-bearing transaction account" includes a traditional checking account or demand deposit account on which the insured depository institution pays no interest. It does not include other accounts, such as traditional checking or demand deposit accounts that may earn interest, NOW accounts, Money-Market deposit accounts. |

Be Smart About Saving and Spending |

|
|
It is important to teach children to make change, how savings and checking accounts work, how money grows in banks, how a budget can help manage money, and how to get the best deal when buying something.
Bedford Loan and Deposit Bank is willing to help make those first steps in helping to teach your child to start saving. Once your child fills up their quarter saver they can come in with a parent or guardian and open a savings account with $5.00 or more. Two forms of identification are required.

FRAUD & THE NEW TECHNOLOGY
|
|
Here are the latest tips from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. (FDIC) for protecting against new schemes using electronic devices.
* THINK TWICE before responding to "urgent" text messages.
A new scam involves a text message sent to cell phones and smartphones (a hand-
held device to access the Internet and make calls) warning bank customers that
their debit or credit card had been blocked for security reasons. The message urges
users to call a hotline to unblock their card, but instead they reach an automated
response system asking for their card number, personal identification number (PIN)
and other information.
* BE ON GUARD against unexpected pop-up windows on Web sites, including your
bank's.
If after you're logged onto your bank's Web site - or on any Web site, for that
matter - and you get an unexpected pop-up window asking for your name, account
numbers and other personal information, that is likely a sign that a hacker has
infected your PC with spyware and is trolling for enough information to commit
identity theft and gain access to your bank account.
It's normal for your bank to ask for your login ID and password when you first log in
and to ask you to answer a "challenge question" if you want to reset your password
or start using a new computer. BUT YOUR BANK WILL NOT ASK YOU - through
a pop-up window - to type your name and information such as your date of birth,
mother's maiden name, bank account and cell phone numbers. Banks only need
that type of detailed personal information when the account is initially opened.
* BE SUSPICIOUS of unsolicited offers to download games, programs and other "apps."
Those "deals" could contain malicious software directing you to fake Web sites or
install spyware used to steal information that can lead to theft.
|
|
YOUR BEST DEFENSES AGAINST HIGH-TECH SCAMS?
|
|
* Be aware that cyber criminals always look for ways to use new technology such as
smartphones to try to commit fraud;
* Stop and think before giving personal information in response to an unsolicited
request, especially one marked as urgent, no matter who the source supposedly is;
* Only communicate with your bank using phone numbers or e-mail addresses you
are certain about - such as the customer service number on your bank statement or
the back of your card - and add these important numbers to your phone's contact list;
and
* Only install programs that you know are from legitimate Web sites, such as your
Internet service provider, financial institution, wireless phone company or trusted
app vendors.

FAKE CHECK SCAMS: HOW TO IDENTIFY A SCAM
|
|
There are many variations of the scam. It usually begins with someone offering to:
* Buy something you advertised for sale;
* Pay you to work at home;
* Give you an "advance" on a sweepstakes you've won; or
* Give you the first installment on the "millions" you'll receive for agreeing to
transfer money in a foreign country to your bank account for safekeeping.
Scammers claim to be in foreign countries where they say it's too difficult to pay you directly, so they'll have someone who owes them money in the United States, send you a check or money order.
The amount of the check or money order may be more than you are owed, so you are instructed to deposit it into your bank account and wire the remaining funds to the scammer or someone else. You may also be told to wire some of the funds to pay a fee to claim your "winnings." Scammers may also promise to transfer funds directly to your bank account, wanting you to provide your account information for an electronic funds transfer. Once you provide your information to the scammer, they in turn send a phony check or money order to your bank with instructions to deposit it into your bank account. When you inquire on your bank account, it seems as if the funds have arrived. Whatever the case may be, the end result is the same...once you've wired the funds, you find out that the check or money order has bounced.
It's a scam that can cost you thousands of dollars. BE AWARE!
IF YOU THINK SOMEONE IS TRYING TO PULL A FAKE CHECK SCAM, DON'T DEPOSIT IT...REPORT IT! Contact the National Consumers League's Fraud Center, www.fraud.org. For more information about fake check scams and how you can avoid them, go to www.fakechecks.org.
